Simon’s Cat in Good Company: Meet the Akashic Cats!

October is cat month here at Akashic, as all of us adore those furry felines (well, almost all of us—someone here has allergies). We’re celebrating the release of Simon’s Cat Off to the Vet . . . and Other Cat-astrophes! (available everywhere October 29!) by bringing back our Simon’s Cat in Good Company feature, spotlighting some of our favorite bookstore and library cats from around the world.

(Interested in finding a feline friend of your own? Consider adopting one from your local shelter!)

Today is our last cat feature for the foreseeable future, and we’d thought we’d introduce you to some very special kitties: the cats of Akashic! Please click any of the images below to see them in their full-size cat glory.

First up, meet Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who lives with our managing editor Johanna Ingalls. Boutros was found abandoned on the side of the BQE in Williamsburg in May 2003 and immediately adopted by Johanna & her husband, Reuben. He’s lived most of his life in Brooklyn, with short stints in Maine and West Cork, Ireland. He has many nicknames including Bouts, Bout Bout, Fat Cat, Boutiecutie, and Bouts the cutes. He also lives with a giant dog named Beckett.

A brief pause now to think of Charlie Cat, the former cat of Akashic’s brief West Cork outpost, who also lived with Boutros and Beckett for a while. Here’s Charlie in the midst of some Akashic files:

Next: Cecil P. Lawrence, the cat who lives with our director of publicity and social media, Susannah Lawrence. Cecil was adopted from the New York ASPCA after Susannah spent many months staring wistfully at their listings of adoptable cats. (This followed over 20 years of desperately wanting a cat of her own.) Cecil was originally named “Cicely” by the ASPCA, but that name was quickly rejected in favor of her current one, which is much more fitting. (Readers in the know will probably be able to guess what the “P.” stands for; for a hint, look at her purple collar and think of your favorite fictional radio host!) Likes: sleeping, trying to catch moths that taunt her outside the window, and trying to con her way into getting some human food. Dislikes: water, the outdoors, the sound of the refrigerator, not being allowed to eat marshmallows.

Like most cats, Cecil has a thing for boxes and paper bags.
