“New Orleans Indie Literary Spirit.” While the publishing and literary world is scaling back, the New Orleans scene is flourishing with new bookstores, independent presses, and artist collectives presenting new works to the reading public. In this panel, we will examine the city’s Do-It-Yourself attitude in the literary arts through discussions with Bill Lavender, publisher of Lavender Ink; author and bookseller Michael Allen Zell; publisher Kathleen Calhoun Nettleton; Julie Smith (New Orleans Noir: The Classics), writer and independent publisher; and owner of the city’s newest bookstore, Tubby & Coo’s, Candice Huber.
