Critical praise for Glen E. Friedman:
For Fearless Vampire Killers: The Bad Brains Photographs:
“The Bad Brains are one of the most important and influential bands ever, and photographer Glen E. Friedman captured them in all their punk glory as they were first making their mark in dingy clubs and basements. This photo book honors the Black rock pioneers with almost every image he shot of the group.”
—Entertainment Weekly
For Just a Minor Threat: The Minor Threat Photographs:
“Punk photographer Glen E. Friedman has compiled a wealth of previously unseen images for the aptly named new book Just a Minor Threat: The Minor Threat Photographs of Glen E. Friedman. It also boasts essays from Washington, DC underground stalwarts Guy Picciotto, Alec MacKaye, and Ian Svenonius, as well as Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha.”
—SPIN
For What I See: The Black Flag Photographs:
“Many of Friedman’s photos of the band midperformance include, critically, galvanized audience members, which reinforces the idea that early punk was a social movement. Friedman . . . has been fighting the good fight with his lens for decades. What I See documents a band standing in for any artist committed to questioning rules and living with integrity.”
—Shelf Awareness, STARRED Review
For Keep Your Eyes Open: The Fugazi Photographs:
“While most photographers were taking photos of Fugazi, Glen was making photos with us.”
—Ian MacKaye, Fugazi
“Everyone knows the old saying, ‘A picture’s worth a 1,000 words.’ It couldn’t be more true with this pictorial retrospective of Fugazi, one of the most influential rock bands from the 20th century. Fugazi’s career and DIY ethic are captured in photographs of gigs from their hometown of Washington, DC and abroad.”
—Alternative Press
For DogTown: The Legend of the Z-Boys (with C.R. Stecyk III):
“DogTown: The Legend of the Z-Boys is a stunning book that blends historic words and reports with a photo archive that has a golden shelf in the annals of skateboarding.”
—”One of the Best Skateboard Books of All Time,” SurferToday
For The Idealist: In My Eyes 25 Years:
“The Idealist is a retrospective collection of Friedman’s aesthetics, [featuring] some of the images for which he is justly acclaimed and many others that will be new to his fans, ranging from DogTown skateboarders, and hardcore heroes to hip-hop icons, cityscapes to portraits, public intellectuals to historical monuments.”
—BOMB
For Recognize:
“Recognize your humility, recognize the power of nature, recognize the beauty of the world. It is rare to find a photography book like this, one that genuinely and with total directness conveys the spiritual qualities of the material world.”

We’ve Got a Bigger Problem Now is the next in the incredible series of Glen E. Friedman’s books of photographs that he has released from his archives over the last five years. The subject this time is Dead Kennedys, the infamous punk band that has inspired and politicized generations since they released their first record in 1979. Dead Kennedys’s debut was the first punk album to top the music charts after the 1977 punk explosion in the UK, and stateside the name alone threw them into the forefront of controversy. Their outspoken lead singer Jello Biafra’s unique voice, political satirizing, and animated performances made them a must-see.
From 1980–1982, Friedman photographed the band in Los Angeles, which had the largest punk scene in the country. Dead Kennedys were one of the earliest bands he photographed, while he was still making photos for SkateBoarder magazine. Friedman was using color film almost exclusively at this point, not yet realizing that there were no publications that covered punk music that printed in color; the underground periodicals of the time, which were few and far between, were only able to print in black-and-white.
We’ve Got a Bigger Problem Now offers many never-before-seen photographs, along with iconic classics of Dead Kennedys previously published over the years. The book includes text from artist Shepard Fairey and Jello Biafra himself!
