Simon’s Cat in Good Company: Elmo and Red, The Bookshop of Chapel Hill (North Carolina)

October is cat month here at Akashic, as all of us adore those furry felines (well, almost all of us—someone here has allergies). We’re celebrating the release of Simon’s Cat vs. the World (available everywhere as of October 1st!) by featuring some of our favorite bookstore and library cats from around the world. Did you see us going cat-crazy on Tumblr a few months back? This is why. Come back every Wednesday and Friday in October to be introduced to a new purrfect pal.

(Interested in finding a feline friend of your own? Consider adopting one on October 29th, also known as National Cat Day!)

Today, we introduce you to Elmo and Red, two cats who call The Bookshop of Chapel Hill their home. From the store staff:

Elmo and Red arrived at The Bookshop of Chapel Hill six years ago. They have yet to learn the ins and outs of the cash register, but they are superb salesmen. Red likes his circular bed in the window, drinking water from (anyone’s) cup, and following small children around the store. Elmo likes the topmost branches of his cat tree, eating (anyone’s) lunch, and getting attention from young co-eds. Both are very laid back, friendly felines—and they very much enjoyed the antics of Simon’s cat. (We’re hoping they didn’t get any ideas from him . . .)

(Ed. note: These cats are incredibly adorable. Elmo looks like he’s up to no good—though for a cat whose interests include “getting attention from young co-eds,” what should I have been expecting? Red does look like he loooves that bed (which is just his size)! Speaking of Red, am I the only one who saw this picture and thought of Flaming June?)
