Akashic Books mourns the loss of Anthony Winkler (1942–2015), one of the truly great comic/satirical fiction writers of the modern era. Best known for his novels The Lunatic and The Duppy, Jamaican-born Winkler used bawdy, uproarious story lines and pitch-perfect dialogue to shine lights on human frailty and resilience. His books are so profoundly funny that we have sold them with “money-back guarantees” that if a reader does not laugh out loud while ingesting his work, they get a refund. Needless to say, nary a refund has ever been requested.

Tony’s effect on readers is poignantly captured in this video, and while these testimonials are all given by Jamaicans, his humor and brilliance are recognized across the English-speaking world.

Best-selling novelist Marlon James writes, “Every country (if she’s lucky) gets the Mark Twain she deserves, and Winkler is ours, bristling with savage Jamaican wit and heart-stopping compassion.”

Tony’s most recent publication was the 2013 novel The Family Mansion, published once again to rave reviews. He is survived by his lovely wife Cathy and their children, who were with him when he passed on Friday, September 18, 2015.

It has been a tremendous honor to publish Tony’s books, which we know will be continue to be devoured by readers for many decades to come.
